Raul Fragoso

Veterinary Assistant

Primary Clinic: Salinas

Raul was born and raised in Mexico City, where he earned both a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and a Zootechnics degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), as well as serving on the faculty. Zootechnics is the scientific art of managing domestic or captive animals, including genetics, breeding, reproduction, feeding and nutrition, handling, healthcare (preventive medicine), and economics. Degrees in Zootechnical studies or engineering are more popular in South America and Iberian Europe rather than in other parts of the world.

For the five years prior to his joining Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics (SPEC), Raul worked for an Olympic equestrian facility and multispecies ranch in Thousand Oaks, California, where his primary activity was assisting doctors in a broad spectrum of activities, primarily reproduction, but he also gained experience in foaling, dentistry, and endoscopy. He reports that while there, his passion and love for horses thrived and, moreover, triggered his strong desire to learn more about equine internal medicine, orthopedics, reproduction, and surgery.

Raul’s short-term goals are to enjoy working at SPEC, which he chose to be part of because of its incredible reputation. He wants to gain enough experience and knowledge to be able to achieve his long-term goal, which is to become a licensed DVM in California.

Raul has an 8-year-old Australian Shepherd named Nana, who was his “assistant” at his previous job as herd manager. Nana is now retired and has a wonderful life as part of Raul’s family.
